Keeping GNS awake and running on iPhone?

Post: # 2323Post WEdward2

Good morning,
I'm a long time User of the paid version of GNS. Recently I've run into a problem while using GNS. I plug my iPhone into power to charge the battery, all my PC Software is running and GNS is monitoring and reporting, BUT my iPhone is apparently going to sleep or putting GNS in the background. I'm sure this is an iPhone setup issue that has changed as GNS used to stay active and monitoring all night as long as it was plugged into charge. Now it seems to run for x-minutes and then the screen is turned off and the app put to sleep.

I've reviewed the iPhone setting, but can't seem to find an option. Any ideas on how to keep GNS running?

Thanks!
Bill

Hi Bill.

For iPhone iOS 18.1.1. try Settings > Display and Brightness, scroll down to "Auto Lock" set to "Never".

Not sure if that will help but worth a try, only downside is the security implications of leaving an iPhone Auto Lock set to never because anyone could pick up your phone and access your data or use the iPhone after you have logged on and put the iPhone down, you would have to remember to switch "Auto Lock" back to a preferred timeout after that nights session is over, although I think if you click the power button once then the screen will lock anyway and require face I.D. or passcode to log back in.

I'm using a ten year old iPad here just for GNS when the observatory is running and keep that beside the bed, plugged in, as it doesn't have the Auto Lock function that is present on the latest iOS 18.1.1 that ships with current iPhones.

I think that for apps that are never to sleep on the latest iPhone iOS but still perform some task, like raising an alarm, that feature has to be hard coded into the app and use the iPhone Notification Centre options so that the user can switch on or off allow notifications while the screen is locked, or the phone is in do-not-disturb mode, but that is not present in the current GNS app (AFAIK), Jaime, Miguel or Águeda would have the answer to that...

Hi Will, Bill,

I was not aware of that change in iOS - but we definitely want the phone awake to avoid relying in any underlying notification system and power saving state that would jeopardize the main GNS responsibility.

By the looks of it that setting should work, could you please Bill confirm?

Thanks,
