We design and build astro instruments that keep your observatory running safely on its own — cloud detectors, roof controllers, sky quality monitoring and more. Made by people who observe and image.
✦ Made in the Milky Way
A fully automated observatory is built in layers. Each layer adds capability and safety — you can start with just monitoring and expand from there. These are the building blocks.
Weather & Sky Monitoring
Know when it’s safe to open and when to close. Cloud, rain, humidity, wind — measured continuously and acted on automatically.
Observatory Control
Open and close your roof or dome automatically based on conditions. Control motors, switches and sensors from a single controller.
Alerts & Emergency Protection
Stay informed when something needs attention, and make sure the observatory closes itself if no one responds. Two complementary systems.
Dew Control & Other Products
Keep your optics clear through the night and mount multiple telescopes on a single setup. Smaller range, but useful additions to any observatory.
Our Automate Your Observatory guide walks through every layer — from basic sky monitoring to fully hands-off operation. Read it before buying anything.
A few highlights. CloudWatcher and Dragonfly are what most customers start with — and keep for years.
Infrared cloud detection, rain sensor, sky brightness, humidity and temperature — with optional wind. The product most customers start with and keep for many years.
Learn more → Observatory Control · Since 2016 DragonflyControls roll-off roofs and other motorised enclosures. Works standalone or integrated with CloudWatcher for fully automated operation. Proven over many years in the field.
Learn more → New · 2026 Sky Quality Meter LanternfishWi-Fi sky quality meter measuring MPSAS. A newer addition to the range — promising results so far, and still actively being developed.
Learn more → Observatory Control CaterpillarAdvanced controller for dome automation — manages rotation and shutter with support for stepper, DC and three-phase motors. ASCOM and INDILib compatible.
Learn more → Shared Observatory Control StarlingRoll-off roof controller for shared observatories. Multiple users, one roof — each with their own independent interface, coordinated access control and safety override.
Learn more → Portable Cloud Detector PocketCW2Compact Wi-Fi cloud and sky quality detector for portable setups. No observatory PC needed — a self-contained device with free app for cloud, rain and sky brightness.
Learn more →Lunaticoastro started as Lunatico Astronomia in Torrelodones, Madrid in 2006 — founded by Jaime Alemany, a working astrophotographer who wanted tools that actually worked. Everything we build is shaped by the same problem: keeping a remote observatory running safely through the night so the imager doesn’t have to be there. In 2025 we added Lunaticoastro Pacific Ltd in Hamilton, New Zealand, to serve customers in the Asia-Pacific region.
We don’t build products with planned obsolescence. If something can be repaired, we want it repaired.
We say what our products do and what they don’t. Specs are honest, claims are verifiable.
You get answers from people who know the product. We’ve kept that as we’ve grown.
